You want to has a 100 GHz processor for your PCz?

Maybe in a few years, you can haz it.

I could see this being Intel's next processor. we had huge speed gains with the Pentium 4 family, then we had big gains in terms of multicore design and functionality starting with the Core 2 Duo and culminating in the Core i7. Now we'll see huge speed gains again with graphene technology. I just hope they'll make compatible hardware just as speedy.

The stepping stone to photonic chips, though the two technologies are entirely unrelated I might add.

This will be an incredibly nice performance boost. Imagine this in dual/quad core!  Shocked

I'll find out a little more on theis subject. My brother-n-law works for Intel as a chip builder an he knows what is in R&D an when it will be available to the public if the military doesn't have access to it yet.

Speed isn't everything, but it sure as hell helps.

Oh, I know, but the returns lowers as the speed increases.  You need a mixture of speed, bandwidth, and multiple cores.

wuh?

If they were to manufacture a 1THz processor 5 years from now and you bought it, don't ya think you'd be capable of doing just about anything with that much speed? 1 Trillion decisions every second, that's damned fast. About a thousand times faster than your standard houshold processor of today.

Yeah, but what I'm saying, a 100GHz processor is going to be much much much more expensive than a comparable multicore, high bandwidth processor.

Yes, and no one disagrees with you. Multicore design is standard fare now. If they make graphene-based processors, then the first batch will certainly be multicore. Possibly quad core.

I still can't wait until they finally get photonics mass produced. This Graphene business is an awesome appetizer to that.
