Hello Everyone and Welcome to March!

   This month the Gamer Dirt staff (and community) is going to be concentrating on three new and exciting things.

   First things first, the not-so-fun or exciting goal: Member activity is down and we need to give it a boost. The best way to do this is the time tested word of mouth. So this is our challenge to you: Tell every soul on the planet about our existence! Well, at the very least mention the cool forum you’re on to your video game loving friends, family and coworkers. It would greatly be appreciated.

   Secondly, to promote our new site wouldn’t it be nice if we had a contest, with worthwhile prizes worth money? We think it would but we need your input as to what kind of contest we should host and what you would like to see. This really is member driven so we aim to appease the crowd on this one.

   Lastly we would like to introduce our new affiliate/partner program. Our goal is to team up with blogs that currently do not have forums or the ability to manage one to become a central hub for a variety of video game enthusiasts. Our hope is to support the opinion of small but well managed blogs that may not be widely known. So keep your eyes open for information of our new affiliates as they join. If you write a video game blog, or know someone who does, point them our way for more information.

Let us know your thoughts (especially on contests),
mmeadwolfe [admin],
S1lv3r_W0lf [admin],
and the Gamer Dirt Team

PS. If you have any site-related questions, and would like to get in touch with the administrators, please send a pm to mmeadwolfe or S1lv3r_W0lf on the Gamer Dirt Forum, and we'll get back at you as soon as possible.

Sorry for the mix-up, it seems in transferring the data over this board was set to an archive board. You should all be able to reply now.

I was going to mention a fanfic contest, but I don't think there are many writers around anymore.

This was one of my original ideas but then I came to the same conclusion and thought its best left for later.

I have been talking with some friends about contest ideas and one mentioned a video game "artifact" creation contest. So everyone picks something from a game and create it using anything you need to make it look real. Then everyone submits pics of their creation and the best ranked one wins. So for example I can choose to make the claw-gauntlet from Prince of Persia. I could make it out of leather and some thin aluminum to create the claws. (Take picture -> submit -> Huh -> profit) Then the admins choose the best of the best and put it up for a vote for the winner. Or something of the sort.

Other ideas include fanfic movies, cartoons and artwork (again, do we have artsy people?). Or perhaps machinima? First to world domination takes the pot?

How does a "make your own 2D Adventure Game Contest" Sound?

Ideally we can find a free, easy to use game engine that requires little to know actual code knowledge and can be learned quickly. Give everyone a month to do their best work and submit what they have. Admins chose the top few entries then put it up for a community vote. Thoughts?

Sounds cool. I'd have that as a contest.

Except for the fact that any coding outside of url's and img's are completely foreign to me. Lol.

I'm looking for a simple engine that requires little coding skill. I found one but its a bit in depth to get started with, but its free and cross platform.

I was looking at one called Point and Click DK It requires a bit of code and a little bit of learning. I ran though the tut but I have to say I'm still a bit lost.
Alternatively there was a program i used a long while back called RPG Maker. I found it easy to use and despite having the ability to add scripts its not needed at all. It uses a simple switch bank that is used to follow the progression and the program handles most everything for you.

for P&C DK it is rather simple, below is a sample of having a character in a room. (Its from the tutorial) Note that the character does not speak english, but the code IS in english.

Code:
level (1)
 {
 row (1 ;Hey Bob, was geht bei dir? ; true)
  {
  speech (self ; Hey Bob, was geht bei dir du alten Pessaweng?)
  speech (ben1 ; Balidödtööööö!!!!)
  speech (ben1 ; Welche Uhrzeit im Zimmer ich woas es nimma!!)
  wait(1)
  speech (self ; Bob, du bist echt mal 'n Schädel, meine Fresse.)
  }
 row (2 ;Du, Bob. Sag mal...; true)
  {
   speech (self ; Du, Bob. Sag mal wat hälste eigentlich so von Diktatur?)
   wait(0,5)
   speech (ben1 ; Diktatur geht auf jeden Fall klar! Muss!)
   activate (bob ; 1 ; 3)
   deactivate (bob ; 1 ; 2)
  }
 row (3 ;Wie bitte? Wie bist du denn drauf?; false)
  {
  speech (self ; Wie bitte? Wie bist du denn drauf?)
  speech (ben1 ; War nur Spass, ich wähl doch eh nur APPD!)
  speech (self ; Na da bin ich ja beruhigt.)
  deactivate (bob ; 1 ; 3)
  }
 row (4 ; Geiles T-Shirt; true)
  {
  speech (self ; Geiles T-Shirt! ; dontwait)
  speech (ben1 ; Geiles T-Shirt!)
  speech (self ; Danke! ; dontwait)
  speech (ben1 ; Danke!)
  wait(0,4)
  offspeech (16 ; 7 ; Ich bitte beim Author von Kommisar Kaputtnik um Verzeihung für das Stehlen dieses Gags :] )
  }
 row (5 ; Tschüss!; true)
  {
  speech (self ; Tschüss!)
  endscene()
  }
 }

how about either:
a) an animation contest
b) Fan Art contest

Also Why dont you guys start a store and sell gamerdirt hats or tees, i'd so buy one of either lol plus it could get us rolling with better publicity but how bout the store after more members join. just a thought

a) Thats a very specialized area that few people have the skill to do well
b) Very possible once we get more members. Or just have two concurrently.
c) The idea has been thrown around, i happen to know a guy that designs stuff like that. Ill call him up and see what we can do as far as that goes.
