360 has gone to hell
«

So over the years I have been telling people that the computer game industry has gone to hell, and its finally starting to show up on the 360 (yay!).
So 9 of the last 11 computer games I bought didn't work the first day I got them. They took countless updates and driver changes to get them to work for a measly hour and most of them I had to wait for the fourth or fifth game patch to even have a stable enough game that I could play. Three of them still flake out and crash to this day (i gave up on them ever working, thanks Witcher). So this brings me to a few days ago playing the sims 3 and I saved/exited the game only to discover that really save now means permanently delete. I thought to myself "This would never happen if I were on a console."...
LESS THAN ONE WEEK LATER: My brother and I just got around to getting the two non-multilayer DLCs for Borderlands. After an hour of trying to transfer his lvl 50 char from my xbox to his xbox (and failed), and figuring out that if he was the first player and not just signed it would allow us to load both the DLCs and not just have an error with the second, we finally decided to just use my 50 and his 43, wouldn't take that long to power-level him up anyhow. So we get a good 10 mins of game time in before I had to leave to go somewhere and we save/exit. Low and behold his character was gone. Gone from the game, and the HDD. No possible way to recover.
I get it, computers are extremely versatile in what hardware they have and in the configurations that they appear, but the gaming industry just lost their scapegoat, the xbox is the same, each one is made the same, same hardware, everything. Whats the excuse now for these horrific bugs? A game crash losing an hour of play is one thing, but a "successful" save that really removes all existence of ever playing the game? No error message and no chance at recovery?
Well, I give up. Fork over an extra 25 bucks just to have to start over from the beginning of the game. I guess ill just go play wii now, give it a chance to throughly disappoint me.

A game is only as good as the programmers that made it. Same for an operating system. Same for hardware engineers.
Yeah, you'd think such high-profit items would deliver. But look at the 360's history. It has undergone, what, three hardware revisions?
That console was so hastily put together I'm surprised that no customer got hurt! I bought a first-gen 360 back in summer of 2006, and unsurprisingly, I got the RRoD treatment about a year and a half later. Finally, the Elite consoles seem fail-free, somewhat quiet, generate less heat and draw less power. Bout friggin time, too.
So, I guess you were doing multiplayer on those PC games. Otherwise, you should've been able to play content on just the disc without error. Yeah, that's what sucks about the multiplayer side of the house: too many updates. What the PC industry really needs to do is to figure a way to make it easy to update patches. I generally find it is easy but it just takes a little work and most people aren't willing to go through those efforts when they already paid the money. They shouldn't have to make the effort. The updates should be automatic and seamless kinda link how XBL does it. That would be nice if all PC games could do that!
I forsee that Microsoft might venture into the PC world, as far as a game server system goes. They could institutionalize it like they did XBL.....and Bungie.

Actually no, they were all in solo play. (Dead space, spore, bioshock, the witcher, black&white, prey and chrysis are all included in the list: "Did not work out of the box")
The largest problem I find with PC games and their patches is they can range from 50 to 100 mb! So you want to sit down and play a game, well now your waiting another hour to download the patch.

Ummmm....wow. In solo play?
I don't get it. I think you should try unplugging your network connection to the PC you're playing these games on and then try to play the game, see if that helps. That seems VERY strange that a game would make you update when you're not doing online play. Very strange.

What computers are you buying? I've had plenty of hardware issues but nothing that bad in a game.

Custom built, but nothing "exotic" all mainstream hardware. Most of the issues made me upgrade my gfx card to beta drivers. (NV 8800)

Interesting. My computer is notoriously unstable, but I've realized that it's because I've got fairly high-end hardware in it except for my old-ass video card. Also, there is ATI hardware and drivers built into the motherboard, which causes a driver conflict that randomly crashes the computer, so I've killed off the video drivers until I can get an ATI card in there.

There must be an option in either the BIOS or the OS that lets you disable certain portions of your chipset, like on-baord sound and video circuits. If you're already using a PCI/PCI-e video card, it wouldn't hurt to disable the mobo features that are now just taking up space and processing power. And beta drivers are usually going to have bugs. I'd rollback to the previous and usually more stable drivers. What's the worst that could happen...lose a few FPS?

Most store bought computers are so locked up your lucky if you can set the time from the bios anymore. Although yes very true there should be an option to disable the onboard video.

Actually upgrading was the only way, Nvidia was fixing the problems the game made. It seems backwards to upgrade the driver to fix the program.
